ketchikan

Nestled along the pristine shores of Alaska's Inside Passage, Ketchikan stands as a captivating port of call, offering travelers an immersive experience into the rugged beauty of the Last Frontier. As ships glide into port, they are greeted by a panorama of mist-shrouded mountains, dense forests, and the crystalline waters of the Tongass Narrows. Known as the "Salmon Capital of the World," Ketchikan's rich cultural heritage is intricately woven with its fishing industry, evident in the bustling docks where fishermen haul in their daily catch. Beyond its maritime charm, the town pulsates with Native American culture, showcased in the vibrant totem poles that dot the landscape and the traditional Tlingit and Haida artistry found in local galleries. Visitors can wander through historic Creek Street, a former red-light district now lined with colorful wooden buildings housing boutiques, cafes, and museums. Whether exploring the wilderness, delving into indigenous history, or simply savoring the tranquility of its coastal setting, Ketchikan promises an unforgettable Alaskan adventure.

A former tenured associate professor of humanities for the University of Alaska Southeast, Teague invites anyone who would like to have an authentic, small-group (1-7 people), local experience within the rural rain-forest of Southeast Alaska, to join him on a mindfulness trek outdoors. Connect together with the environment and one another. Feel free to ask about mindfulness practices or how to protect the Tongass National Forests' old growth trees!

Having hiked the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee multiple times and many of the trails around the Great Lakes in Michigan and Canada—Pictured Rocks, Porcupine Mountains, the Bruce Trail, the North Country Pathway, Lake Superior Coastal Trail, and Agawa Canyon to name a few. Teague also guided Northern Michigan University students on hikes as an English instructor in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula as well as University of Michigan students in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and upstate Maine as part of the New England Literature Program. And now Teague started a summer-season hiking and driving tours here in Ketchikan: Tongass Teague LLC’s Mindfulness Rainforest Treks. So, if there is one thing he knows about, it’s hiking and how to do it safely

Set sail along the Inside Passage and enjoy an authentic Alaskan fishing experience on this half-day cruise. Spend ample time at sea on-board the Aleutian Ballad, a ship that featured on the TV show “Deadliest Catch”, and watch as the local fishermen catch Bering Sea king crab, as well as rockfish, eel, octopus, and prawns.

On your way to the fishing grounds, you will get to know the boat and her colorful history as a working crab fishing boat in the notorious Bering Sea. You will get an exclusive look into the world of crab fishing and meet the crew — some you may recognize from Deadliest Catch.

You may get very close to islands and land where you can see Alaskan wildlife such as bears, deer, bald eagles. Seals are also possible on this ride! While we can never promise wildlife will be in sight, we keep a close eye with binoculars and always make every best effort to let you know if wildlife is in view.
